  • Ep. 299 Today's Peep Tells the Secret Lives of Classic Rock Songs: When Ram Jam Meets Prison Songs, Cover Songs You Never Knew Were Covers, This Day In Rock
    Jul 11 2025

Music weaves stories through time, revealing unexpected connections that shape our cultural landscape. In this episode, Pat Walsh takes a refreshing break from political topics to explore the fascinating world of cover songs and their surprising origins.

Did you know the rock anthem "Black Betty" by Ram Jam started life as a 1933 prison work song recorded by convict James "Ironhead" Baker? Or that Manfred Mann's radio staple "Blinded by the Light" was actually Bruce Springsteen's creation from his debut album? These musical metamorphoses demonstrate how art evolves across generations while maintaining its emotional core.

The journey continues with a fascinating "This Day in Music" segment packed with memorable moments: Joe Perry's cardiac arrest during a Hollywood Vampires show, John Fogerty's legal battles with former Creedence bandmates, and the Beatles returning to Liverpool for their film premiere where John Lennon controversially gave Nazi salutes to the crowd. We also revisit the poignant final performance of Jerry Garcia and the dark story of session drummer Jim Gordon, who played on countless hits before tragedy struck.

Pat's enthusiasm for music history shines through as he shares lesser-known versions of famous songs, including the Don Harrison Band's compelling take on "Helter Skelter" featuring former Creedence members. These musical connections reveal the complex tapestry behind songs we thought we knew well.

As Pat approaches his milestone 300th episode, his genuine passion for uncovering music's hidden stories creates an engaging experience for casual listeners and dedicated audiophiles alike. Whether you're discovering these revelations for the first time or revisiting familiar musical territory, this episode celebrates how music transcends time while continually reinventing itself.

  • Ep. 297 Today's Peep Is "Rolex" Ugly, Weed Eaters & Rock Stars, Radio Nightmares and is it the Greatest Soft-Rock Tune of All-Time?
    Jul 8 2025

Milestone moments and exciting announcements fill episode 297 as we steadily approach the big 300 mark! Broadcasting from the foothills of Northern California with weed eaters working diligently in the background, I'm sharing some truly electrifying news for music lovers.

The legendary Robin Trower—one of my top five favorite rock guitarists of all time—has agreed to appear on the Pat's Peeps podcast! But that's not all. Potential appearances by country icon Marty Stewart and rock band Everclear (whose "AM Radio" I play at the start of every radio show) might also be in our future. These conversations represent dream opportunities for me as both a broadcaster and lifelong music fan.

Media appearances are stacking up as we prepare to promote our Pat's Peeps community events. I'll be on Fox 40's Studio Live with Gary Gelfand and Scott Moak on Thursday, followed by filling in for Sam Shane on The Shane Reaction on Friday. The biggest news? Our upcoming Pat's Peeps gathering at the State Fair, tentatively scheduled for July 22-24 at the Save Mart Wine Bar area. This marks a significant push for the business side of our podcast community.

The episode takes a fascinating turn as I share clips from Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd's recent "Fool Around and Find Out Operation" targeting human trafficking, with his colorful commentary on the 255 arrests made. I also reflect on rewatching the 1971 Clint Eastwood film "Play Misty For Me" about a radio DJ stalked by an obsessed listener—a movie that still sends chills down the spine of anyone working in radio.

As we close with Christopher Cross's "Sailing" (which reminds me of beautiful Portofino), I extend an invitation to join our Pat's Peeps Tour to Sicily this October. Whether you're a longtime listener or just discovering us, there's never been a better time to become part of our growing community.
