Genesis 41 (ESV, click here to read)

    Description:
In this week's episode, Matt and Eric discuss Genesis 41. Joseph has spent the last 13 years, waiting for God to manifest the dream He had given to Joseph. Joseph is able to integrate his story, and also not show up with any expectations or presumptions of the future. His life is marked by presence. How do we "read" our current state in life? What would we title this chapter of our life? Why do we try to control the future, and how do we stay grounded in the present?

    Text:

    Genesis 40

    Description:
In this week's episode, Matt and Eric discuss Genesis 40 where we find the story of Joseph in prison. Joseph shows up with kindness towards his fellow prisoners, and even helps interpret dreams for them. Joseph shows us that even in the "pit", in the dark night of the soul, when we feel like we are at our bottom, when we are forgotten and overlooked, we can still show up and be present and serve others. Why do we crave being seen? Why is it so painful when we are overlooked and forgotten? How does someone show up with kindness and service when they are being forgotten and overlooked?

    Genesis 39

    Description:
In this week's launch of season 7, Matt and Eric discuss Genesis 39 where we find the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife. Joseph's story goes from bad to worse. What should someone do when their life is in crisis? How does someone stay present with themselves, others, and God in moments of conflict and relational pain? And how does someone grow and mature when living with integrity doesn't guarantee a good outcome?

    SHOW NOTES

This is our season ending episode. We will resume with season 7 next month.

In this week's episode, Matt and Eric reflect on the Holy Week, Good Friday, and Easter. What does a pastor think of the so-called "Chreasters", the people that show up to church, but only on Christmas and Easter? What would a pastor say to a once-a-year attender if they could be totally candid? What can weekly church attenders learn from the Easter-only attender? And what is the church missing on our perspective of Easter Sunday?

    Matthew 25:14-30

    Description:
In this week's episode, Katie Noble joins Matt and Eric to discuss Jesus' parable of "The Talents". In the parable, Jesus talks about 3 people who are each entrusted with talents, or money, from their master. When the master returns, two were welcomed into the joy of the master, and one went out with weeping. What is the difference between the two outcomes? Is it about performance or perspective? What are we suppose to do with a text like this?

    Matthew 25:1-13

    Description:
In this week's episode, Katie Noble joins Matt and Eric to discuss Jesus' parable of "The Ten Virgins". In the parable, Jesus compares those who are ready and waiting for Him and those who will be unprepared. What does it mean to be ready? To wait? Should we look at a Scripture text like this with fear? Anxiety?

    Luke 18:9-14

    Description:
In this week's episode, Kevin, Matt, and Eric discuss Jesus' parable of "The Pharisee and the Tax Collector". In the parable, Jesus gives a shocking revelation about what kind of person is justified in the Kingdom of God. This parable invites into several questions: How is someone justified before God? Is this something we accomplish or is it gifted to us? How do we wrestle with the tension to see our justification in Christ while also pursuing so called "spiritual disciplines"?

    Text:
    Luke 16:19-31

    Description:
In this week's episode, Katie, Matt, and Eric discuss Jesus' parable of "Lazarus and the Rich Man". In the parable, Jesus does much more than just give us some data points about hell, but rather, He reveals that there are two different ways of showing up in the world. One where we cruelly live for ourselves without concern or compassion for others, and one where we deploy our empathy and compassion for others. How do we know if we are blind to our own cruelty? How do we develop and cultivate compassion? How do we show compassion to ourselves?
