SENTENCE PATTERN - AN INTRODUCTION

In English, the sentences are used in a similar pattern - subject, verb, then object/adjective/adverb.

There are five sentence elements. They are subject, verb, object, complement, and adjunct. The subject is the performer of an action. It is usually at the beginning of a sentence. It may be a noun, a pronoun, a noun phrase, or a noun clause.

The nice fact about the type of structure is that we are able to know who is doing the action and the outcome of the action.

We can list the basic sentence pattern as

1. She/ runs. (SV)

2. You/ have/ a book. (SVO)

3. They/ are/ tall. (SVC)

4. My friend /gave/ me/ a gift. (SVOO)

5. She made him angry (SVOC)

6. I/ sit/ here. (SVA)

7. He/ kept/ the umbrella/ there. (SVOA)
