    Born in Shooter's Hill and educated at Wellington College, Algernon Blackwood had a varied career, farming in Canada, operating a hotel, and working as a newspaper reporter in New York City before moving to England and starting to write horror stories. He was very successful, writing 10 books of short stories and appearing on both radio and TV to tell them. He also wrote 14 novels and a number of plays, most of which were produced but not published. He was an avid nature lover and many of his stories reflect this.

    The tale follows a medical professional on an emergency visit to a sick patient on a winter night. The doctor faces absurd, surreal predicaments that pull him along and finally doom him.

  • The Day the Earth Stood Still (Lux Radio Theatre)

    After a flying saucer lands in Washington, D.C., the United States Army quickly surrounds it. A humanoid emerges and announces that he comes "in peace and with good will". When he unexpectedly opens a small device, he is shot and wounded by a nervous soldier. A tall robot emerges from the saucer and quickly disintegrates the soldiers' weapons. The alien orders the robot, Gort, to desist. He explains that the now-broken device was a gift for the President of the United States that would have enabled him "to study life on the other planets".

    The program was subsequently produced on The Lux Video Theatre on May 3, 1956. Director Earl Ebi has been quoted as saying that this is "one of the most interesting and unusual shows we've done in a long time."
