If P.G. Wodehouse and Mrs. Beeton had a child, it would be “The Joy of Guests.” The tone of both the writing and the performance draws on the nostalgia of mid-20th-century educational television—with the depth of knowledge to match—but Jeremy Strong‘s wry sense of humour allows him to pay homage to that form while satirizing it at the same time. The balance will have you alternately snorting with laughter into your gin and tonic (but never—banish the thought—your banana daiquiri) and scribbling notes for your next attempt at hosting.

Careful instructions on how to engage in a particularly English war of manners with a guest who insists on bringing shoddy wine to your dinner parties and the author’s hyper-polite evisceration of the finicky rituals of afternoon tea are special highlights of an altogether delightful listening experience.

A Perfect Blend of Satire, Nostalgia, and Education
