“We were quite aggressive, we need to be more aggressive. We have good build-up to the last third but then we miss something. But we faced the competition in the right way today, we were competitive.

“I won’t talk about the summer. The good news is in the Europa League, we are scoring many goals. We will prepare for the Europa League game.

“We have to deal with a lot of things in the summer, but today it was a really good game to prepare for the final. If we put some players out in the feeling of the last game, almost 10 days without playing, it would be a mistake.

That is the most dangerous things in this club. You can feel it at the beginning of the game. Between our box and opponent’s box there is a lack of urgency. Brentford 4 v Manchester United 3. Ruben Amorim : “I think it reflected our season. We started quite well, controlling the game, not creating big chances but controlling the pace of the game. We suffered a lot with the throw-ins and set-pieces but we already knew that our team would struggle against this team.

“We didn’t have the height necessary for this kind of game. They scored twice in this kind of moments, even with De Ligt on the floor.

“And then in the second half I felt that we were near the draw and then we suffered a goal and like some other times we disconnected. And then another goal, almost three minutes, five minutes later. And then we pushed forward, tried to score, we scored twice but we didn’t have the time to do better.”

“They have to understand this season is really important also to understand that we cannot do this anymore. Of course, we know the context, but this kind of season we need to change that. They need to understand what it is to play for Manchester United.

“I think they did really well. They are not playing so much, but then they have to play 90 minutes because we have to change some other players to save them for Thursday.

“I think we can help the young kids even more, especially Tyler Fredricson did quite well in the third goal. He needs more help from Amad. So these small things I think we can help them more, but I’m really happy with the performance of the young kids.”

“We don’t know what will happen with De Ligt. If we don’t have Luke Shaw available on Thursday we could have a problem and then we don’t have enough defenders for the game. We had to protect some players at half-time, thinking about Thursday. So it was just that, not about thinking about the game.”

“But if you look at the game, especially the second half and especially with the sending-off, we arranged ways to get inside the box and that is something that we are improving. We created chances, we managed to score one, but I feel that we lost two points today.

“The first thing is to focus on ourselves and not on the other teams. The next thing is to be really honest. We are at a different level in this moment, but everything can change. I remember when I started seeing the Premier League, it was the opposite. We need to focus, step-by-step, not trying to think too far ahead.

“We have an ultimate goal that is winning the Premier League. I’m not crazy. I know that is not going to be next year, but we are trying to build something and the small things are really important and we did that during this year. We need to improve next year. I know that is important for the fans.”
