  • Sweat Equity: Why Hard Work Yields Small Gains First
    May 24 2025

Ever wonder why it feels like you're working yourself to exhaustion but barely moving the needle? That's not failure—it's the natural beginning of compounding success.

Drawing from personal experience, Dana takes us through his entrepreneurial journey that started with homemade yard signs created with dollar store markers and his daughter's art supplies. For nine straight months, he earned just $163 weekly despite relentless effort—then suddenly made $12,000 in month ten without changing his approach. This powerful illustration of how success compounds reveals why persistence through minimal initial returns separates successful entrepreneurs from those who quit too soon.

Using a compelling analogy from professional boxing, Dana explains how fighters train intensely for 8-12 weeks—changing diets, sacrificing family time, enduring physical pain—all to perform for just 36 minutes with no guarantee of victory. Similarly, business success demands disproportionate effort before the breakthrough moment arrives.

The podcast explores how our definitions of both "success" and "hard work" evolve throughout our entrepreneurial journey. What begins as physical labor often transforms into mental challenges; what seems like an ambitious financial goal often needs adjustment as we understand business realities. Through sharing his story of building a lawn care business from nothing to sustainability—including a devastating setback that nearly reset his progress—Dana provides an honest, unfiltered look at what entrepreneurship actually requires.

This episode isn't about motivational platitudes; it's about setting realistic expectations so you can mentally prepare for the long game of business building. If you've been feeling discouraged by seemingly small returns on massive effort, this perspective-shifting conversation will reinvigorate your commitment to staying the course.

  • When Life Mows You Down: Gratitude brings perspective.
    May 15 2025

Ever feel like your business is crumbling beneath your feet? That's exactly where I found myself after a life-altering car accident forced me away from daily operations of my thriving lawn care company. What followed was a painful cascade of losses - every single employee and half my customer base vanished within months.

The journey from managing multiple crews back to being a solo operator required a complete mental reset. Those training videos from last spring showing a shop full of employees learning the ropes? That reality disappeared faster than I could have imagined. The systems I thought were solid proved insufficient when I couldn't physically be present. I had done "just enough" with my onboarding, handbook, and training program, but reality revealed these weren't robust enough to sustain the business through crisis.

Today's episode gets deeply personal as I share how gratitude became my lifeline during rebuilding. When my only truck broke down this morning, leaving me with repair costs and just six completed properties out of twenty scheduled, my employee marveled at my continued positivity. The secret? Perspective gained from remembering where I started - crying in my living room years ago with no truck at all, until a stranger unexpectedly donated one. This perspective shift isn't just feel-good advice; it's a practical business strategy that's transforming how I make decisions, interact with clients, and structure operations moving forward.

Whether you're facing business challenges or personal setbacks, practicing gratitude for your current position - however difficult - provides the mental clarity needed to rebuild stronger. Subscribe for more unfiltered insights as we navigate the entrepreneurial journey together. Until next time, let's make more money with the right mindset.

  • Making Mow money vs. Snow money. Is plowing right for your lawn business?
    Feb 10 2024

Snow plowing is currently in full swing in the Midwest and can be a profitable service to offer clients. Todays episode outlines some of the minor and major aspects of snow plowing to help you make the adjustment easier. I speak openly of my personal mistakes, inefficiencies and advice gained through various bad decisions.

The goal of todays show is not to lay out a comprehensive plan for owners to implement snow plowing services. Instead, I aim to help the listener think more clearly about how to make it a fit for their business and cultivate profitability from the beginning.

  • Landscape Summit 2023 & intimate entrepreneurship.
    Jan 27 2024

I recently attended my first conference as an entrepreneur at Landscape Summit 2023 in Louisville, KY. In this episode Marquette and myself get personal about my business journey. We discuss some of the take aways and why I decided to make the Summit my first ever conference.

The event was hosted by Mike Andes, the founder of Augusta Lawn Care. Mike is a passionate and successful landscape business owner who shares his insights and experiences at the event, on his popular YouTube channel and podcast.

At Landscape Summit 2023, I heard from Mike and other speakers who have achieved remarkable results in their landscape businesses. They discussed business trends, marketing strategies, leadership skills, financial management, hiring and retention, equipment and technology, and much more.

I had the opportunity to network with hundreds of other landscape professionals who were eager to share their stories, challenges and solutions. I also made some valuable connections and friendships that extended beyond the event. I highly recommend this event for anyone in the home service industry.
