  • Here's to ALL the Teachers & Moms Out There!
    May 9 2025

    Send us a text

Teacher's Appreciation AND Mother's Day in the same week?! Boy what a packed show! Each year we highlight amazing teachers that help shape our children's lives every single day.

This year we welcomed back Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard! This time he is an AUTHOR! We are so happy for him as he starts out this exciting new portion of his platform!

Meet Greg Smedley-Warren, affectionately known as “Mr. Greg,” an experienced, current kindergarten educator and the creative mind behind The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. With an impressive 19-year teaching journey, Greg’s expertise spans various grade levels, including a brief stint in fifth grade and two years in second grade. However, it was a reluctant transition to kindergarten that unveiled his true passion and calling. Never wanting to teach kindergarteners, Greg’s journey took a turn when he discovered an instant connection on the very first day of kindergarten. From that moment on, he knew kindergarten was his calling. Fuelled by his dedication to his students, Greg has proudly remained in the kindergarten classroom for 16 years, continually inspired by the boundless energy and curiosity of his students.

Mr. Greg posted something that went absolutely VIRAL and he and his husband have not looked back since!

To learn more about Mr. Greg go to thekindergartensmorgasboard.com.

Then later we celebrate the mamas out there. I cannot imagine what yall go through! So strong, so resilient. I could only wish to be as much. For a couple of years now at nolapapa.com, we have introduced our small group of writers that help to showcase the complexities of society. Well... one of those writers comes a sassy chica named Becky Balfe. Becky, Becky, Becky. Boy oh boy. This one here, yall. She's a doozy. Well more specially - my original podcast cohost. But even before that, she was an editor for a GIANT platform called lovewhatmatter.com.

She reached out to me to write an article that went freaking viral. And then forward, we've annoyed each other ever since! I love Beck. She is the model of resiliency. But what really shines is our ability to be the best damn mom on this planet. Her son is 13 now and they live their BEST LIVES let me tell you. Living with Lupus and ongoing health issues, Becky is an exemplary mom, cat lover, and human. I am so grateful the universe catapulted our paths to align.

I asked Becky to write another article in addition to being a guest this week on the show. And she done blew my damn mind. She came out the damn closet!!!! AND I was the first person she came out to! Unbeknownst to me!

Love you, Beck. And to all the other mama's- including my 3 moms.... Happy Mother's Day and I love you!!

  • Another Round of Ochsner's Milk-Bank Miracles & A Homelessness Report from Council Member Lesli Harris
    May 2 2025

    Send us a text

I am truly excited about this new segment brought to ya' by Ochsner's Childrens' Hospital!

Milk-Bank Miracles with Dr. Harley Ginsberg will shine light on what the NICU is and what hospitals do to keep our little, itty bitty nuggets alive! It really is miraculous.

Dr. Ginsberg is the founder and medical director of Mothers' Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist. He has written chapters for medical textbooks on neonatology and has published scientific medical articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Perinatology, and Clinics in Perinatology among others. Dr. Ginsberg's professional interests include the use of donor human milk to prevent neonatal intestinal disease as well as the role of human milk in infection prevention.

I am blown away by this opportunity to partner with him and open a window for our audience to learn more not only about his Mother's Milk-Bank but also the guided hand to learn about the NICU! (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.)

To learn more about this go to: www.ochsner.org

    _______________________________________________________________________________________________

Then later we welcome New Orleans Council Member Lesli Harris to hear about what our city is doing to combat our homeless crisis.

I met Council Member Harris one hot and blazey summer afternoon and since then, she has graced our show with her smile and passion for our city. I was so inspired by her devotion in this area of SO MANY areas to focus on. I learned by our interview that over 200 individuals have been rehabilitated through the "Home For Good Program" (https://homeforgoodneworleans.org)

Over 1,000 individuals have been taken off the street and ARE GIVEN recourses in all aspects of life; not to only get them off the streets, but to give them dignity, confidence and motivation to get back up and make the next day better than the last.

I wish you could see Council Member Lesli Harris' eyes when she presents the raw data, stats and numbers that really are jolting. There were a couple of topics that we didn't see quite eye to eye, but that is what civil dialogue is and unfortunately has been lost in our country for some time now.

I came to her with urgency because of a situation that happened with me and my family in the Marigny a couple of months back. It startled me, and I felt helpless. I don't like that feeling, ESPECIALLY when my babies are with me. My fear is that if the homeless numbers don't fall, the Governor will come in without warning and sweep the city before the city council, mayor, police chief etc. can do one thing.

I am encouraged by the newly released nola.com article that showed Council Member Lesli's vision. IS WORKING. And that bottom line is all I truly worry about. Her candor, smile and authenticity won me over from the beginning and I am still living for it.

    THANK YOU COUNCIL MEMBER HARRIS!

  • It's Jazz Fest with Ian McNulty & A Couple of NewYork Times Best Sellers!
    Apr 25 2025

    Send us a text

Can you feel it? Well, if you don't live in New Orleans right now, maybe not but LIVE IT vicariously through me and my family! Douglas and my oldest daughter LOVE Jazz Fest. Me, you may ask? Nope. I went back 13 years ago to surprise my sweet mama! We took her to see Al Green and it was epic. It was hot. It was super bright and my skin turned 7 shades of red. I'm good on that, but I LOVE to see the happiness flow through my family and the rest of partakers.

This year, I thought it would be super cool to welcome the King of Food Reviews and All things NOLA! Who none other than NOLA.COM's inspirational food and culture writer, Ian McNulty! And y'all... he is the REAL DEAL.

Foodies are intimidating, usually. Remember that guy that would come to review the food in the Disney movie Ratatouille? Ok- well that is NOT Ian. I was able to sit down and really hear the passion in his voice and the love in his heart for New Orleans.

Ian McNulty has been writing about the life and culture of New Orleans since 1999 as a reporter, columnist, and author. He is a staff writer for the New Orleans Advocate, where he focuses on the food culture of one of the world's great food cities, and his radio commentaries air weekly on the New Orleans NPR affiliate. He is author of A Season of Night: New Orleans Life after Katrina and Louisiana Rambles: Exploring America's Cajun and Creole Heartland, both published by University Press of Mississippi. The latter was named one of the top travel books by the Society of American Travel Writers. (courtesy google.com)

Sit down, grab some Iced Tea and get inspired by Mr. McNulty's journey from North to South and all in between.

Find his book all over and here! https://www.amazon.com/Season-Night-Orleans-after-Katrina/dp/1934110914

Then later, we welcome New York Times Best Selling Duo from the Illustrated Baby Sitter's Club series and the Superman Adventures Comics, Raina Telgemeier and Scott McCloud!

The two teamed up with Scholastic to create a children's novel that allow kids' own wheels to turn while submerging them into a world that explores their own understanding of topics like death.

My oldest daughter loved it. It was so cute to see her curled up on the couch or her bed reading this book with such pride. She was so excited to review it for me.

"Makayla is bursting with ideas but doesn't know how to make them into a story. Howard loves to draw, but he struggles to come up with ideas and his dad thinks comics are a waste of time. Lynda constantly draws in her sketchbook but keeps focusing on what she feels are mistakes, and Art simply loves being creative and is excited to try something new. They come together to form The Cartoonists Club, where kids can learn about making comics and use their creativity and imagination for their own storytelling adventures!"

  • It's National Children's Book Day with Todd Parr and Highlights Magazine!
    Apr 18 2025

    Send us a text

HAPPY NATIONAL CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK DAY!

As you probably can tell, your papa is pretty excited about this one. Knowing personally the hard work and dedication it takes to create a children's book really helps me appreciate this day. When I wrote our books, I wanted to literally shrink down to the size of a kid and create a conversation with them, allowing them to create their own questions; giving them the control to hopefully allow light bulbs to turn on for both child and parent at the time when their bedroom lights turn off and night lights brighten the room right before bed.

For this show, I really wanted to showcase happiness and nostalgia. Who better to have than the sensational Todd Parr and the ICONIC Highlights Magazine?!?

First up, I welcome back New York Times Best Seller, Todd Parr! You probably will recognize MANY of his books from everywhere. Todd Parr is the author and illustrator of more than 60 books for children, including the New York Times bestselling The I Love You Book, The Earth Book, and The Thankful Book. He has inspired, empowered, and entertained millions of children around the world with his bold images, unique sense of humor, and inclusive storytelling. His books have received numerous awards and are available in 20 languages. He is the co-creator of the popular Daytime Emmy®-nominated animated TV series ToddWorld with Gerry Renert of SupperTime Entertainment, and several short films for Sesame Street have been based on Todd’s work. Todd has partnered with Target, the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank, Stouffer’s, People magazine, and other companies and organizations to help people and animals, and to promote literacy. He lives in California with his adopted pit bulls.

To find more about ALL OF HIS AMAZING books go to: www.toddparr.com

Then later I welcome back my friends at the one and only HIGHLIGHTS Magazine!!We had SUCH a good time last time with national puzzle day I thought who better than Highlights to tell me their TEAMS ALL TIME FAVORITE CHILDREN'S BOOKS GROWING UP!

For generations, this team has produced the most inspiring bundle of freshly smelling papers that ignite the deepest parts of ourselves at the earliest of times in our lives. Who better to hear their most beloved stories they remember from their own bedtimes.

Hearing this teared me up, I won't lie. It's so sweet and I hope each of us really cherish those early moments we had growing up. Not only because the book was fantastic, but because the person that read it to us also loved us with all of their hearts.

  • Learning More About Ochsner's Milk Bank of Louisiana & A Local Documentary's Hollywood Award!
    Apr 11 2025

    Send us a text

This week we have a couple of great Local interviews!

Ochsner Children's Hospital has been one of our anchoring sponsors for years now and for our fifth season, We have created a BRAND NEW SEGMENT called "A Mother's Giving: & the Milk Bank of Louisiana with Dr. Harley Ginsberg."

Dr. Ginsberg is board certified in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine and has been on staff at Ochsner since 1987. He served as both the Section Head of neonatal medicine at Ochsner and the Medical Director of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center from 1989 until 2021. Dr. Ginsberg managed the team at Ochsner that took care of babies during Hurricane Katrina. Currently he is Medical Director of the NICU at Ochsner Kenner Medical Center. Dr. Ginsberg is the Founder and Medical Director of Mothers Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist and is a member of the Standards Committee for the Human Milk Banking Association of North America. He has written chapters for medical textbooks on neonatology and has published scientific medical in articles in the New England Journal of Medicine, Pediatrics, Journal of Perinatology and Clinics in Perinatology.

Fully accredited by the Human Milk Banking Association of North America, Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana at Ochsner Baptist was Louisiana’s first human milk bank and the 24th nonprofit milk bank in the United States. Preterm infants are at risk for a condition called necrotizing enterocolitis, which results in inflamed intestines, bacterial infection and damage to the colon and intestines. Without proper care, the infant may die.

Pasteurized donor human milk helps offset these potential dangers. Unfortunately, some mothers of preterm infants cannot produce their own milk. That’s where Mothers’ Milk Bank of Louisiana steps in.As of August 2020, Louisiana provides Medicaid coverage for using pasteurized donor human milk in a hospital. In 2022, Louisiana legislators approved inpatient and outpatient coverage for pasteurized donor human milk.

Listen as Dr. Ginsberg and I dive into the Milk bank of Louisiana and hear the powerful impacts it has on our community and state!

Go to https://www.ochsner.org/services/mothers-milk-bank-at-ochsner-baptist to learn more or to make a donation today!

Then later we welcome back DIRTY DOGS! The local documentary making big waves in our city yall. Not only did the documentary chronicle the heated monopoly on New Orleans' food cart licenses for the French Quarter.

What WAS a half century monopoly was essentially ended by a group of passionate film makers that felt convicted to MAKE THINGS RIGHT. I am so excited to welcome restauranteur and host Brad Bohannan and Cinematographer, Adrian Sosebee to talk about their HOLLYWOOD AWARD they just received in Beverly Hills! Brad also talks to us about his latest venture with his inspirational wife, Jefferson Parrish Council Person, Arita Bohannan. Together and with a village behind them, they work to bring inclusive and autistic friendly playgrounds to neighborhoods and communities t
