  • VINTERFICATION: Script vs. Screen - SIX FEET UNDER Pilot Episode
    May 15 2025

Welcome to out first “Vinterfication” episode!

Vin-I-fication is what a winemaker does - all the decisions he or she makes - to transform grapes, the raw materials, into a final wine.

And so Vin-TER-fication is when we compare the raw materials of a work of entertanment - the script of a tv episode, movie, or comic - and compare it to the final produced thing.

Today we tackle one of the TV shows that helped launch America’s “Golden Age” of television - SIX FEET UNDER. And tell you what to pair with each, whether you're reading the script, or watching the aired episode.

The Wines mentioned in this episode (more information can be found on our Substack VintertainmentStudios.com)

2007 Bodegas Navalon Anciano 'Aged 10 Years' Gran Reserva Tempranillo

Bodega Dehesa de los Canonigos Clarete Luzianilla, Ribera del Duero, Spain 2021

Haus Marke S-22 Solera Red Blend, Burgenland, Austria (93 Points, James Suckling)

  • Wine and Movies: BABY BOOM (1987) - Happy Mother's Day!
    May 8 2025

Today, for Mom's Day, we tackle the 1987 feature film directed and co-written by Charles Shyer (Father of the Bride) and produced and co-wrritten by Nancy Meyers (Father of the Bride, Private Benjamin).

The cast is STACKED - Dianne Keaton, Harold Ramis, James Spader, Sam Shephard, Victoria Jackson, Sam Wanamaker. It features a very 80's baby and is ostensibly a feminist movie but has become horribly dated since its release. Now coming across as moe of a Hallmark movie than a true blue equality manifesto, BABY BOOM is an oldie but not quite a goodie.

Nevertheless, it's worth a revisit to see how far we've come. A few moments are still authentically funny, and we of course paired it with two wines: one that matches the film's deficits, and one that contrasts it and gives you what you're missing!

DALLAS' WINE: Charles Shaw (2 Buck Chuck! Or I Guess 4 Buck Chuck Now?) Cabernet Sauvignon

DAVE'S WINE: 2022 Škegro Family Winery Blatina “Krs Crni”, Bosnia & Herzegovina (yes, a wine from Bosnia! Made from the indigenous "Blatina" grape!)

  • VINTERVIEW: Working with Francis Ford Coppola w/ HALEY SIMS
    May 1 2025

Today we interview HALEY SIMS, who plays the dead wife that haunts Adam Driver's Caesar Catalina in MEGALOPOLIS. Haley tells us all about her experience auditioning, filming, stunt training, wrapping multiple times, and attending the premiere of the film.

You might have spotted Haley on the TV shows such as DEAD TO ME, RESERVATION DOGS, GOOD GIRLS REVOLT, and FLAKED, and most recently she co-starred in the horror movie THE GROVE which received a limited theatrical released on April 4th.

This is a companion episode to our 2-part coverage of Francis Ford Coppola’s ALPHA and OMEGA, The Godfather and Megalopolis. Make sure you check out those episodes first!

This is an excellent conversation, Haley is a brilliant storyteller, and I am so happy to be sharing this episode with you.

  • Francis Ford Coppola: Winery Godfather to MegaFlopolis, Part 2 - Megalopolis (2024)
    Apr 24 2025

Here’s PART TWO of our coverage of Francis Ford Coppola’s Alpha and Omega of his career. Make sure you check out PART ONE where we cover The Godfather (1972) and the rise, almost fall, then final sell-off of Coppola’s winery empire in Napa, Sonoma, and Oregon.

Here in PART TWO we cover the Omega, MEGALOPOLIS (2024). And taste two well-aged Coppola wines - a 1998 Niebaum-Coppola “Cask” Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2000 Niebaum-Coppola Cabernet Franc! - and say which wine pairs best with which film.

We opened these two bottles at Curated Wine Shop (go follow them on IG!) We brought them randomly, spur of the moment, this was not planned or mentioned to the Curated folks in advance. And when we arrived, and told them what we had and why we were opening them, they said: “Oh, Megalopolis? The Production Designer, Bradley Rubin, is sitting right over there!”

Soooo…yeah. We sure as shit called him over and he graciously allowed us to talk his ear off about his exeperience on making the film!!! Note that this was a very impromptu recording, so the audio is muddy, music and background noise abound, and Brad is a soft spoken person, but it’s all legible!

    Enjoy, my friends.

  • Theatrical Tasting: SINNERS (2025)
    Apr 23 2025

We saw Sinners in the theater this past weekend, and wanted to do a quick mini-episode covering why it's an important movie at this time in cinematic history.

In part because of the Rights Reversion deal director Ryan Coogler struck with the studio, also because it's a true-blue tentpole crowd pleaser with more on its mind - a combination we'd lost for a while there.

Paired with...? (Hint: Blood Oranges and Honey.)

  • Francis Ford Coppola: Winery Godfather to MegaFlopolis, Part 1 - The Godfather (1972)
    Apr 17 2025

Today is the first of THREE PARTS (well, two main parts + a bonus companion "Vinterview"!)

In this episode we cover the Alpha of Coppola's career, THE GODFATHER (1972).

In PART TWO we'll cover the Omega, MEGALOPOLIS (2024). And then taste two well-aged Coppola wines and say which wine pairs best with which film.

Along the way, we'll also chronicle the rise and fall of Coppola's wine empire, from its humble beginnings in Napa, to it's almost dissolution in the early 90's, to its massive expansion to Sonoma and Oregon in the 2000's, to its sale in 2021 in order to finance his lifelong ambition - to film his 40-years-in-the-making Megalopolis. And then take stock of what still exists today.

Then in our companion Vinterview, we'll be interviewing one of the actresses from the Megalopolis movie! And whoever you think it might be - no, it's not her. (It's gonna be a wacky surprise.)

LINKS TO THINGS MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:

How Dracula (1992) Rescued Coppola's Winery - Our own article about how Coppola almost lost it all in the early 90's, only to have his Bram Stoker's Dracula film turn it all around. There would have been nothing to sell to finance Megalopolis if there had been no Dracula.

What Went Wrong (Podcast) - Our fave movie podcast that has 2-part chronicle of how The Godfather was made, and it's the best version of this story out there in podcast form. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Winebid - The site where we snagged our well-aged Niebaum-Coppola wines! One for $60 and the other for an astounding $25 (!!!) This is a treasure trove for wines if you look for stuff collectors don't care (too much) about.

Curated Wine Shop - The shop we drank the wines at, met the Megalopolis Production Designer in, and got connected to the actress we'll be interviewing later! If you live in LA, you gotta check this place out. We love them.

  • Wine and Movies: THE LINGUINI INCIDENT (1991) - Director's Cut
    Apr 10 2025

Also known as Houdini & Company, The Robbery, The Incident, and (our favorite) Shag-O-Rama.

The Linguini Incident was the directorial debut of Richard Shepard, the man who would finally get out of “movie jail” when he made 2004’s Matador (starring Pierce Brosnan), then went on to make The Hunting Party (starring Richard Gere), Dom Hemingway (starring Jude Law), and The Perfection (starring Allison Williams).

It was a low budget film by a first time director that somehow snagged the INSANE cast of:

    • David Bowie
    • Rosanna Arquette
    • Ezster Balint
    • Marlee Matlin (already an Oscar-winner!)
    • Buck Henry
    • Andre Gregory

The final edit was taken away from the director, different cuts were released in different countries, and it’s main theatrical release was in Los Angeles in 1992…during the LA riots. When there was a curfew.

30 years later, the co-producer and director got the rights back, sourced the longest 35mm print they could find (an epic story in its own right!) and release this Director’s Cut - 8 minutes shorter than the shortest of the previous cuts!
