La arquitectura románica es la mejor muestra del esfuerzo germánico por encontrar un estilo semejante al de los antiguos más desarrollados.

Ya anticipábamos en la tema 24, dedicada al arte isabelino y plateresco, lo convencional de tla duración de un periodo artístico. Entendemos por arquitectura barroca un estilo de construcción y decoración característico, que comienza a instalarse en Europa a finales del siglo XVI y perdura sin trascendentales variaciones hasta la segunda mitad del XVIII. El siglo clave, pues, del arte barroco es el XVII. Las fronteras exactas de este modo arquitectónico no pueden determinarse, pues, aunque tradicionalmente venía concediéndose a Lorenzo Bernini la paternidad simbólica del estilo, la historiografía actual descubre antecedentes barrocos en hombres de tanta importancia como Miguel Ángel.

Nos encontramos ante un producto artístico plena­mente oriental. El problema de que los árabes no fueran creadores de formas artísticas propias no resta mérito alguno a su labor. Las soluciones arquitectónicas por ellos adoptadas habían sido empleadas por persas y bizantinos desde muchos siglos atrás, pero lo cierto es que sólo los árabes lograron hacer de este arte un arte universal.
