The Iliad of Homer is the earliest work of European literature that we have. Created in the eighth century BC it has continued to arouse interest for over 2000 years. The Iliad by Homer is an epic poem central to ancient Greek literature, narrating the siege of Troy. It explores themes of heroism, the wrath of Achilles, the nature of fate, and the quest for glory. Homer, a semi-legendary figure, is credited with composing both "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," foundational works of Western literature.

Among his many other attributes, James Elroy Flecker was a skilled linguist and an expert translator of Latin poetry. In 1913, he planned to write a book to be entitled An interpretation in blank verse of Virgil, Aeneid VI, based on the poetic value of the sounds, together with Latin text and ten prefaces. The surviving translation consists of lines 1-19 and 264-547 from book six, which describe Aeneas' encounter with Sibyl and his visit to the underworld.
