Alfred Percy Sinnett was one of the most significant members of the Theosophical Society. In "The Occult World," he gave long extracts from his early correspondence with Mahatma Koot Hoomi, describing the higher mysteries of nature possessed by the Indian "Mahatmas." C Jinarajadasa was a writer, philosopher, Freemason and prominent theosophist of his day. This particular piece is a lecture he gave in 1905, and he discusses consciousness, the inseparable duality of love and beauty, Plato's world of ideas, the divine mind and other related topics.

Annie Besant was a writer, lecturer, prominent theosophist, and women's rights activist of her time. She was a frequent contributor to various theosophical publications of her day. This particular piece was a lecture she gave in 1893, discussing yoga, consciousness, the Atman, and a multitude of related concepts.

Leadbeater describes what a non-member might expect to encounter behind closed doors at a Theosophical Lodge meeting, such as he would have attended in his day, what they may get out of it, what they might give and what is gained by all, through this collective group of individuals coming together. The outcome is likely not all that different from every real occult lodge, not just the theosophical ones.

In his treatise on the Occult Arts, William Judge explores a process of precipitation that could only be described as a sort of astral alchemy, such as was taught by the Theosophical Society, at the time. To Madame Blavatsky and her peers in the Spiritualism movement, this was a popular method of receiving messages, sometimes in the form of a cypher, from the Masters of Ancient Wisdom, most often referred to as simply the Adepts.

It had an impact far beyond the circle of its primary audience and greatly influenced leading artists such as Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky.

Annie Wood Besant (1847-1933) was a prominent Theosophist, women’s rights activist, writer, and orator. She was born in London into a middle-class family of Irish origin. She fought for the causes she thought were right, starting with freedom of thought, women’s rights, secularism (she was a leading member of the National Secular Society), birth control, Fabian socialism, and workers’ rights. Soon, she was earning a small weekly wage by writing a column for the National Reformer, the newspaper of the National Secular Society. She was also one of the leading figures in Theosophy.

Leadbeater addresses this question of the aspirant, who may be wondering why the Master hasn't singled them out and asked for more. Leadbeater points out that the offer must come from the other side. It is the role of the student to make him or herself available and wait for the Master to reach out to them, since any older student can help teach and attend to a newcomer's immediate needs. Alexander Wilder was a theosophist, journalist, and prolific writer in his day; being heavily recognized as one of the leading Platonists in America at the time. William Wynn Westcott was a theosophist, Freemason, and Rosicrucian and one of the cofounders of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn.
