This story was first published in the Civil and Military Gazette on 11 May 1887, and collected in the first edition of Plain Tales from the Hills in 1888 and in subsequent editions of this collection. Artist Dick Heldar returns to 1890's England from the war in the Sudan after sustaining eye injuries and turns to painting for a living. Their plan is simple: they will leave India and go to Kafiristan, a remote part of Afghanistan, and set themselves up as kings there by force.
