Lost Hearts tells the story of Stephen Elliott, an orphan aged 11 years and of an inquiring frame of mind, who is sent to stay with his much older cousin, the scholarly Mr. Abney, at a remote country mansion, Aswarby Hall, in Lincolnshire. Montague Rhodes James (Goodnestone, 1 de agosto de 1862 - Eton, 12 de junio de 1936), anticuario, medievalista y escritor británico de cuentos de terror. Su infancia transcurrió entre altas y tupidas bibliotecas repletas de libros antiguos, en su mayoría textos religiosos, en el condado de Kent, Los padres de M.R. James, optaron por brindarle una educación acorde con sus preferencias y lo enviaron al prestigioso Eton College. Continuó sus estudios en la ciudad de Cambridge, en el King's College, otro colegio al cual sólo unos pocos tenían acceso.
