William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was an English author of horror, fantastic fiction, and science fiction. Hodgson used his experiences at sea to lend authentic detail to his short horror stories, many of which are set on the ocean. He became one of the most influential horror writers of the 20th century. He died in World War I at age 40. 'A Tropical Horror' is the vivid story of a ship which is attacked by a hideous sea serpent.

First published in 1910, The Horse of the Invisible tells the tale of Carnacki, a ghost detective investigating the haunting of a country house that threatens the wedding of the Hisgins Family's daughter and her fiance. The source of the apparition must be found before the soon-to-be-wed woman is driven mad, or even to her death. Carnacki does not suspect supernatural forces are at work in this case, but even a ghostbuster can be wrong.

“The Gateway of the Monster” is a story featuring Thomas Carnacki, a detective who investigates cases of an occult or supernatural nature. After a good dinner, Mr. Carnacki relates his experiences of ghost finding to his limited circle of four friends whom he has summoned to his home in Chelsea.

The Voice in the Night is an uncanny story about a ship becalmed in fog in the middle of the Pacific. In the night, the watch hears a voice hailing the ship. It would seem to be a lone man in a rowing boat, but the individual does not wish to be seen. He is starving and urgently wants food - but despite this, he will not approach the ship and vehemently rejects the idea of being rescued. Instead they have to float some provisions out to him in a crate, which he takes off to a nearby island where his fiancée is dying of hunger.

The sea is a lonely place, particularly when your ship was blown off course and disabled. William Hope Hodgson takes this scenario and adds the discovery of a derelict ship floating near you. Of course you would go investigate wouldn't you? The captain and part of the crew - including the ship's doctor, who is telling the story - visit this enticing phantom. They find the ship inhabited by a living mold that had been lying dormant just waiting for its next meal.

This fused together his passion for sleuthing and interest in the Occult. It was a memorable success.
