Moins connu que Les Aventures de Tom Sawyer, Les Aventures de Huckleberry Finn est souvent considéré comme le chef-d'œuvre de Twain, et comme le livre fondateur de la littérature américaine moderne. Il est raconté à la première personne par Huckleberry "Huck" Finn. La Vie et Les Aventures de Robinson Crusoé, l'un des romans les plus publiés de l'histoire, raconte l'histoire d'un jeune Anglais naufragé dans une tempête et contraint de se débrouiller seul sur une île isolée... du moins le croit-il.

En 1651, Robinson Crusoé quitte York, en Angleterre pour naviguer, contre la volonté de ses parents qui voulaient qu'il devienne avocat. Le navire est arraisonné par des pirates de Salé et Crusoé devient l'esclave d'un Maure. Il parvient à s'échapper sur un bateau et ne doit son salut qu'à un navire portugais qui passe au large de la côte ouest de l'Afrique. Arrivé au Brésil, Crusoé devient le propriétaire d'une plantation.

Originally published anonymously in the form of a pamphlet, the intriguing ghost story entitled: "A True Relation of the Apparition of One Mrs. Veal the Next Day after her Death to One Mrs. Bargrave at Canterbury the 8th of September, 1705" has long been the cause of academic speculation and dispute. The theme of the story is an uncanny interaction between the spiritual world and the physical world, as well as the nature of death itself. The story describes a posthumous visit by Mrs. Veal to her friend Mrs. Bargrave, during which strange insights and confidences are exchanged.

A Canterbury resident, Mrs. Bargrave, is visited by her old friend and former neighbor, Mrs. Veal, who says that she would like to catch up before departing on a journey. They discuss books on death and friendship before Mrs. Veal tells her friend that her locked cabinet contains a purse filled with gold, and asks her to write a letter to her brother. Mrs. Bargrave steps out to call her daughter, and when she returns she finds Mrs. Veal standing in the street about to leave. Mrs. Bargrave subsequently looks for Mrs. Veal, but finds out that she had died the day before the visit.

Born circa 1659, he was also a journalist, a pamphleteer, a businessman, a spy … and a writer of short stories. Pubblicato sotto forma di libello, nel 1727, "The Friendly Daemon, Or, the Generous Apparition" riporta lo scambio epistolare fra Duncan Campbell - guarito dall'epilessia per il fortuito intervento di un angelo custode - e il suo medico, a cui viene chiesto un parere professionale su quanto avvenuto. L'uomo, esortato a dire la propria, finirà col raccontare altri eventi simili, esibendosi poi in un’erudita disamina di tutte le tecniche più strane utilizzate per guarire dai mali peggiori.

Questo breve racconto, pubblicato originariamente in "The History And Reality Of Apparitions" (1727), trasmette la memoria di un fatto inquietante, avvenuto ai tempi della Prima Rivoluzione Inglese (1642-1651). Protagonista della vicenda sarebbe stato il celebre bandito James Hind, artefice di molte rapine nello Huntingdonshire. Nel tentativo di rapinare quello che all’apparenza sembrerebbe un mite allevatore di campagna, Hind si ritrova infatti di fronte ad una figura infernale, che sembrerebbe preannunciargli la sua imminente morte.

Agli inizi del ‘700 Daniel Defoe dedica molto tempo alle indagini critiche sull’'cculto, rivelando un grande allineamento con lo spirito dei suoi tempi. Nei presenti racconti, l'autore dismette le vesti di romanziere e, ricorrendo al metodo deduttivo tipico del giornalismo, tenta di ricostruire quanto di vero si celi alla base di vari aneddoti su fantasmi, entità demoniache ed angeli.

Originariamente incluso in "The History And Reality Of Apparitions" (1727), "Il fantasma accusatore" riporta un avvenimento bizzarro, della cui veridicità nemmeno Defoe è sicuro. In occasione di un processo per omicidio, l’imputato - che sembrerebbe sul punto di venire assolto per mancanza di prove - assiste d'improvviso ad un’apparizione inquietante, che lo costringerà a confessare il misfatto.
