British flyer Will Laurence and his extraordinary Celestial dragon, Temeraire, gratefully anticipate their voyage home from China. But before they set sail, they are waylaid by urgent new orders. Alan, Sam, Alice and Aurora operate behind enemy lines on L-Day: the Allied liberation of the Occupied South. The partisans suffer grievous losses linking up with friendly forces. Hitler mercilessly crushes an SS coup. The Brotherhood of the Purifying Flame takes advantage of the chaos to pursue its Holy Mission.

Sam, Alan, Alice and Aurora continue to fight against the German forces occupying England. The guerrillas sabotage SS plans to build a concentration camp and also prepare for L-Day: the Allied liberation of the Occupied South. The partisans take steps to deal with a traitor amongst their ranks.

The Martian invaders have overrun the American heartland. Between the Mississippi and the Rockies, only Texas holds out, written off by the high command in Washington, and with revolution brewing in Mexico. Texas has become the Martians' new target. This book is an example of Alternative History. That, in essence, is asking what the future could be like. It suggests the US could have become a Dominion of America. Call this standard history with a twist, or even mythology in part. It is certainly historical material, told in fictional fashion.
