This synthesis of Indian-white relations west of the Appalachians from the end of the French and Indian War to the beginning of the Mexican War is not simply a story of whites versus Indians. A seminal work in Native American literature, Black Hawk’s autobiography offers an eyewitness account of the escalating hostilities between Indigenous peoples and the encroaching white settlers of the early to mid-nineteenth century. After making a name for himself as a war captain for the Sauk, Black Hawk played an important role in resisting American attempts at territory expansion - especially those related to the disputed Treaty of Saint Louis - and aided British forces in military efforts against the United States throughout the War of 1812.

Carson begins this third volume by diagnosing the root causes which eventually gave rise to sectionalism as well as regional differences and changes, the election of 1824, the Adams administration, and the emergence of two parties. Also examined are the removal of the Indians, the plantation system, the Transcendentalists and American literature, the public-school movement, westward expansion, the election of Lincoln, and the Civil War.

In the early 1920s, members of the Osage Nation and others began to turn up dead, and in many cases, the proceeds of oil revenue owned by these people passed to white “Guardians” appointed by the federal government. By 1925, at least 24 Osage had died in unexplained circumstances, and some accounts suggest that the actual number may have been over 100. Local law enforcement seemed unable (or perhaps unwilling) to investigate effectively, and it was left to a small bureau in Washington to undertake their first homicide investigation.
