Da una prospettiva europeo-occidentale, molto di ciò che riguarda lo stato del Giappone, compresa la sua storia e cultura e le persone che vi abitano, sembra non solo estraneo, ma anche in qualche modo inaccessibile e incomprensibile. Chi non se ne occupa esplicitamente, spesso non ha alcun legame con il Giappone. Naturalmente, questo vale anche per la mitologia giapponese. A differenza della mitologia greco-romana o nordico-germanica, il livello di conoscenza di questa mitologia in Occidente è piuttosto basso.
