This story follows a young Spanish Jew, Maximo ha-Levi Constanego, in the land of Mesoamerica. He left his homeland of Spain as the Islamic caliphate gasped its last collective breath of occupation. The Reconquista, the reconquering of Spain, was well underway. Even as newfound freedom blossomed for some, it was not so for the Jews. Maximo was spirited out of the country by his anxious mother, on a ship captained by his Catholic uncle, Rodrigo Constanego.

The Spanish galleon Arista sank in 1539 due to a storm and the heavy weight of its cargo. The ship had been carrying Aztec golden treasure: chains, goblets, plates, statues, lamps, ceremonial swords, bricks, bars, and coins, all of solid Aztec gold. Much of the gold, however, had been thrown overboard trying to save the ship.

Join the expedition of explorer, Hernando Cortez and meet Diego Orteguilla, a 14-year old Spanish boy who signs on to sail from Cuba to the land of Mexico. Rumors abound of strange animals, exotic plants, a beautiful, whitewashed city surrounded by water, and a people who own gold - lots of gold.
