Brain Injury Recovery

Jamila Rizvi and Rosie Waterland have each suffered significant, debilitating brain injury – one through rare disease and the medical interventions that followed, the other through deep childhood trauma.

Unconsciously Screaming is an autobiographical account of a brain injury that the author received when he was a university student. It chronicles the suffering of both the patient and his loved ones, along with the path to recovery. The patient was faced with the psychological difficulties of not knowing if he would fully recover. He also discovered more long-term effects that revealed themselves over the months. The story also takes the reader through the prosecution of the defendant in the case.

Angela Leigh Tucker had not expected death that day. Newlywed, thirty years old and a successful public relations professional, she and her husband were driving home when a semi-truck hurtled over the center-lane divider and crushed their SUV. Her husband died on impact. She was left hanging onto life by a thin, golden thread. With her brain severely injured and her neck, shoulder, and ribs broken, she had instantly lost everything but her will to live.

A child survives the miracle of birth. Regrettably, the doctor discovers an abnormality. Born March 7th, 1973 as the 28th recorded birth to survive with a diagnosis of Eagle-Barrett Syndrome. The rare birth defect involves three triads of urological complications. Continued survival meant multiple surgeries, painful examinations, with tubes inserted into the urethra as the corrective procedures healed.
