Pohádkové vyprávění o rodině a přátelích neposlušného svatojánského Broučka bydlícího za potokem pod jalovcem i s tatínkem a maminkou. Autor knihy byl evangelický kněz a Broučci jsou alegorickým zobrazením rodiny, která žije podle křesťanských hodnot, v souladu s přírodou. Šlo mu především o zobrazení významů, jako byly rodová soudržnost, vzájemná úcta, harmonie člověka a přírody, či poslušnost Bohu. K námětu ho inspirovalo jedno krásné odpoledne, kdy u Hořátve odpočíval a sledoval rej a shon různých broučků. Příběh promýšlel a největší část pak napsal v Čáslavi.
