L'édition définitive des "Fleurs du Mal" a été publiée en 1868, après la mort de Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867). Les premiers recueils furent mal accueillis par la critique. Seuls quelques-uns, dont son ami Barbey d'Aurevilly, défendent la poésie de Charles Baudelaire. Le 5 juillet 1857 parait un violent article du Figaro, qui tout à la fois assure une grande notoriété au poète et le conduit devant les tribunaux. En août 1857, Baudelaire est condamné pour "offense à la morale publique, la morale religieuse et aux bonnes mœurs".

John Donne (1573-1631) is considered by many to be the finest poet of the Elizabeth Age after Shakespeare. Ironically, poetry was not Donne's dominant preoccupation. James Weldon Johnson was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on 17th June 1871. His mother, Helen, a musician and a public school teacher, initially home-schooled him, giving him a love of both English literature and European music. At 16, his education moved to Atlanta University, and he graduated with a degree in 1894. In 1904 Johnson helped in Theodore Roosevelt's presidential bid. On winning, Roosevelt appointed him as US consul at Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, in 1906 and then Nicaragua from 1909.

This collection of 35 poems is a sequel to a volume of lyrical ballads first published in 1798. While the first volume was a collaboration between Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, this anthology contains verses by Wordsworth only. Generally, the poems are less well-known than those of the earlier volume but do include major narrative pieces, like "The Pastoral Epics", "The Brothers", and "Michael".

This enigmatic poem is attributed to Seng-t'san, the third Chinese patriarch of Zen, who died in 606 CE. The tone of the work is revealed in the opening stanza in which the patriarch recommends dynamic introspection as the ideal attitude in solving the apparent problems of life.
