Waar de geografische grenzen al sinds mensenheugenis vastliggen, zijn de door de mens getrokken staatsgrenzen vrijwel voortdurend verschoven. Kijk maar naar Polen, het 'land op wieltjes' dat heen en weer schoof en zelfs lange tijd van de kaart verdween. Of naar het koloniale tijdperk, waarin de Europeanen in Afrika, Azië en het Midden-Oosten de dienst uitmaakten en willekeurig grenzen trokken, wat leidde tot gruwelijke oorlogen. De randen van Europa zijn al veel langer rafelig.
