As World War II progressed, the Okma family took six Jewish refugees into their house, hiding them in a secret room behind their fireplace. The youngest daughter, Kieks, joined the Resistance, delivering illegal newspapers, guiding British parachutists around The Hague and preparing safe houses for Special Forces who were dropped in from England.

Between 1942 and 1945, a group of ordinary citizens formed a network to smuggle Dutch Jews and others targeted by the Nazis south into France, via Paris, and then to Switzerland. This network became known as the Dutch-Paris Escape Line, eventually growing to include 300 people and expanding its reach into Spain. Led by Jean Weidner, a Dutchman living in France, many lacked any experience in clandestine operations or military tactics, and yet they became one of the most effective resistance groups of the Second World War.

More than a million American airmen were involved in air fighting during World War II. When Eighth Air Force aircraft were lost due to enemy action over Europe, the statistics on American airmen accumulated as follows: • Over 26,000 were killed in action. • Over 130,000 became prisoners of war. • Over 7,000 were permanently disabled or hospitalized. • Over 500 were interned in Sweden or Switzerland, neutral countries. • And, over 5,000 evaded capture by the enemy after they were shot down!
