I went into teaching to change the world. Instead, my students changed me. These are some of my stories. When Wisconsin became the first state in the nation in 1959 to let public employees bargain with their employers, the legislation catalyzed changes to labor laws across the country. In March 2011, when newly elected governor Scott Walker repealed most of that labor law and subsequent ones - and then became the first governor in the nation to survive a recall election fifteen months later - it sent a different message. Both times, Wisconsin took the lead, first empowering public unions and then weakening them.

In 2002, New York City's newly elected mayor Michael Bloomberg made a historic announcement: His administration had won control of the city's school system in a first step toward reversing its precipitous decline. In a controversial move, he appointed Joel Klein, an accomplished lawyer from outside the education establishment, to lead this ambitious campaign. On a therapist’s advice, a teacher begins journaling about her school year in an effort to be more present for her family. Her journal documents the school year from beginning to end. Since her school year starts with a bad evaluation, which gets her put on a performance plan, the journal becomes a lifeline for saying everything a "good teacher" would never say.

America has been steadily sliding in global education rankings for decades. In particular, our students are increasingly unable to compete globally in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. According to the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP), in 2010 only 26 percent of high school seniors in the U.S. scored at or above proficient level in math. Another 36 percent were failing.

In his book, Peter Hitchens describes the misjudgements made by politicians over the years that have led to the increase of class distinction and privilege in our education system. This is of course the opposite of what was intended, especially by former Minister of Education Shirley Williams and Margaret Thatcher, her successor in that role, who closed down many more Grammar Schools than Williams.

Can we fix the Public Education system in America? Written by an educator with broad experience spanning nearly three decades, this new book suggests that it's already too late. Education’s ongoing failures are feeding on themselves, perpetuating the failed system.

Common Core is not your typical education reform idea. It is a giant step towards the goal of federalized, corporate-run education, the underlying ambition of elitists in this country for more than 100 years. Parents and educators cannot rely on what they read or hear from the creators of the Common Core for the truth. One must dig deeper, past the lies, to understand the implications of the Common Core agenda.
