Stoicism is one philosophy that is not just theoretical in nature. It is something that you learn to adopt into your everyday life; its ancient wisdom is more relevant than ever today. Dating back to around 300 BC in Athens, Stoicism was initially developed by Zeno of Citium. The essence of the philosophy is one of using grit and self-control as ways of overcoming destructive emotions. Despite the modern perception of the word Stoic, this does not mean to eliminate all kinds of feelings from your life. The goal, rather, is to transform your emotions.

Iris Murdoch, Mary Midgley, Philippa Foot and Elizabeth Anscombe were philosophy students at Oxford during the Second World War when most male undergraduates (and many tutors) were conscripted.
