Ci sono i comunisti e gli scomunisti, i barbari padani e i democristiani, i socialisti craxiani e non craxiani, i postfascisti e i berluscones: settant'anni di costume, di scissioni, di precisazioni, di essere uguali ma diversi hanno finito per affollare il nostro paese di tribù e sottotribù politiche, ognuna con i suoi tic, le sue parole d'ordine e di contrordine, i suoi vizi privati e le sue pubbliche virtù. Filippo Ceccarelli, "curioso di professione", si inabissa nelle infinite pieghe di questa storia cominciata con il dopoguerra e forse ora finita per sempre.

26 maggio 1805: dopo l'incoronazione a imperatore dei francesi, avvenuta nella cattedrale di Nôtre Dame a Parigi il 2 dicembre dell'anno precedente, Napoleone celebra il suo insediamento sul trono del Regno d'Italia.

Al racconto della leggenda dei re fondatori (Romolo, Tito Tazio e Numa) ecco succedere la saga dei Tarquini, densa di misteri ambientati in una seconda Roma, dopo quella romulea, ma tuttavia la prima a poter essere definita grande. Tra la fine del VII sec. e la fine del VI sec. a.C. hanno regnato a Roma due re: uno di origine greca, Tarquinio Prisco, l'altro di origine etrusca, Tarquinio il Superbo. Tra questi due ha regnato Servio Tullio, di origine probabilmente latina, rifondatore della città e della costituzione originaria: un nuovo Romolo.

Duellanti dall'aspetto selvaggio ma con un preciso codice d'onore: il fascino dei gladiatori viene dalla loro ambiguità.

Se il primo dei re abitava sotto un tetto di paglia sul Palatino, a lui si deve una consuetudine che, in epoca tardo repubblicana, avrebbe fatto del colle il prototipo del quartiere "vip" della città, affollato da tutti quelli che contavano. Di questi uomini sappiamo nomi, gesta, leggende, pettegolezzi e talvolta anche le fattezze, ma quartieri, edifici e stanze che hanno ospitato i loro giorni sfuggono alla nostra conoscenza: dove hanno vissuto? Dove hanno preso decisioni importanti?

24 marzo 1944: alle sette della sera la strage è finita. Non rimane che far saltare in aria la cava e murarne l'ingresso per coprire la terribile verità dei giustiziati. Circa 75 sono ebrei detenuti in base all'ordine generale di rastrellamento e in attesa di essere avviati a un campo di concentramento, molti sono prigionieri politici presi dalle celle di Regina Coeli, altri da via Tasso, altri ancora rastrellati per strada e numerosi sono detenuti per reati comuni.

9 maggio 1936: alle 22:30 il duce annuncia dal balcone di Palazzo Venezia "la riappropriazione dell'impero sui colli fatali di Roma". È l'apice del successo di Mussolini: finalmente può vantare il suo Impero, che "porta i segni indistruttibili della volontà e della potenza del Littorio romano". Sono passati pochi mesi dall'inizio della campagna d'Etiopia, quando il duce ha fatto il suo ingresso nelle competizioni coloniali, dettato da motivi di prestigio "nazionale" e di consenso interno.
