With unparalleled freedom in the Golden Age of Hollywood, movies produced during the “pre-Code” era between 1930 and 1934 dealt with a wide range of social issues, including sexual freedom, incarceration, organized crime, race, and class. Films of the period include beloved classics like King Kong (1933) but also lesser-known penetrating cinema like I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932) and Wild Boys of the Road (1933). These films, produced at the height of the Great Depression, boast work by women directors, featured diverse leads, and pushed the limits of contemporary social norms.

When the Fox Film Corporation merged with Twentieth Century Pictures in 1935, the company posed little threat to industry juggernauts such as Paramount and MGM. In the years that followed however, guided by executives Darryl F. Zanuck and Spyros Skouras, it soon emerged as one of the most important studios.

It was made like a television movie, and completed in less than three months. It killed off its star in 40 minutes. There was no happy ending. And it offered the most violent scene to that date in American film, punctuated by shrieking strings that seared the national consciousness. Nothing like Psycho had existed before, and the movie industry, even America itself, would never be the same.

Once, in a theater long ago and far, far away, young audiences who watched the nostalgic space epic of yesteryear, known then only as Star Wars, were duly enthralled. It applied the horror genre's fascination with personal stories captured by found footage to the grand violence of history. Innovative and intense, Cloverfield represented blockbuster filmmaking at its best.
