محمود سامي البارودي، هو الشاعر المصري وأحد زعماء الثورة العرابية وأشعر الشعراء المصريين، فقد أباه وهو في السابعة من عمره، واهتم بعض ذويه بتعليمه فوجهوه بعد التعليم الإبتدائي إلى المدارس الحربية، فتخرّج منها ضابطا متقنا للفنون الحربية، ومع ذلك بقي شغوفا بالمطالعة مولعا بالأدب، فأخذ يلتهم دواوين الشعراء ويتذاكر في قضايا الشعر مع معاصريه، والمولعين بالأدب، فتهذّبت ميوله، وقويت شاعريّته، وتقوّم لسانه على الفصاحة، أخذ ينظم الشعر وهو في العشرين من عمره، رحل إلى الآستانة فإتقن الفارسية والتركية، وله فيها قصائد.

عبقرية عمر هو كتاب يتحدث فيه عباس محمود العقاد عن عبقرية الصحابي عمر بن الخطاب، ولقد حدد العقاد شخصية عمر بأنها (شخصية الجندي). تحدث على أن شخصية عمر كانت تؤهله للزعامة ولولا الإسلام لكان له زعامة قبيلته عدي أو زعامة قبيلته الكبرى قريش. ويتحدث عن أن اختيار أبي بكر الصديق خليفة للمسلمين قبله لم يكن من باب المفاضلة بل من باب التوفيق. يتحدث العقاد في هذا الكتاب عن أخلاقه وأخباره ويدافع عنه أمام أقوال بعض المستشرقين.

ولد في الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في أواخر القرن التاسع عشر، وقد أسره الأدب منذ طفولته المبكرة، ورث مهارة والدته الأدبية، وكتب أول أشعار له في سن الرابعة عشرة، لكن لم تبدأ موهبته الأدبية في الازدهار حتى السابعة عشر من عمره في هارفارد حيث بدأ بدراسته الجامعية، وقد حقق انطباعا جيداً من مساهمته الدائمة في المجلة الطلابية الجامعية محامي هارفارد.
