The Battle of Britain paints a stirring picture of an extraordinary summer when the fate of the world hung by a thread. On January 28, 1742, a ramshackle vessel of patched-together wood and cloth washed up on the coast of Brazil. They were survivors of His Majesty’s Ship the Wager, a British vessel that had left England in 1740 on a secret mission during an imperial war with Spain. The most famous date in history is 1066, and with good reason, since no battle in medieval history had such a devastating effect on its losers as the Battle of Hastings, which altered the entire course of English history.
