Martin Erikssons arbete i Kaptensgruvan i Malmberget är hårt, till och med livsfarligt. Detta blir han varse om när en kropp påträffas i gruvan, fastklämd mellan två malmblock. Kroppen tillhör Manfred Wallin, gruvarbetare och fackligt engagerad. Initialt tror man att Wallin dött till följd av en olycka, men polisöverkonstapel Allan Strömberg och lokaljournalisten Britta Lindh förstår snart att det rör sig om ett mord.
