Scottish-born but a Queenslander to the bone, Jock McLaren was a true Australian hero. As a prisoner, he escaped twice, first from Changi and later from the infamous Sandakan POW camp in Borneo. After paddling a dugout canoe across open sea, he fought for two years with American-led Filipino guerrillas, his exploits so audacious the Japanese put a price on his head.

Fred Korematsu liked listening to music on the radio, playing tennis, and hanging around with his friends - just like lots of other Americans. But everything changed when the United States went to war with Japan in 1941 and the government forced all people of Japanese ancestry to leave their homes on the West Coast and move to distant prison camps. This included Fred, whose parents had immigrated to the United States from Japan many years before. But Fred refused to go.

Marine general William H. Rupertus is best known today for writing the Corps' Rifleman's Creed. Rupertus was one of the outstanding Marines of the twentieth century, but he died in 1945, so his story has never been told. Rupertus "made his bones" in the USMC's "savage wars of peace" before World War II: Haiti for three years after World War I, China in 1929, and again in 1937.

During World War ll, he and his siblings, separated from their parents, were interned by the Japanese for nearly four years. In his 20s, he led a British expedition over the Alps with an elephant to investigate which way Hannibal and his army of 30,000 men and 37 elephants had taken in 218 BC. Later, he founded a start-up corporation in Silicon Valley and was an inventor and entrepreneur. With each surprising twist and turn of his journey, John has built a fulfilling life, infused with purpose and creativity.
