Latino History

American Civil Wars takes listeners beyond the battlefields and sectional divides of the US Civil War to view the conflict from outside the national arena of the United States. Contributors position the American conflict squarely in the context of a wider transnational crisis across the Atlantic world, marked by a multitude of civil wars, European invasions and occupations, revolutionary independence movements, and slave uprisings - all taking place in the tumultuous decade of the 1860s.

This unique fairy tale filled with whimsy and satire is much more than a story for the nursery. When the wife of farmer MacMurrachu loses her washing board, the farmer comes to ask the philosophers for advice. It is astonishing that Simón Bolívar, the great Liberator of South America, is not better known in the United States. Pianist/composer Irving Fields formed one of the first piano-bass-drum trios in jazz and went on to compose hundreds of songs performed by Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Xavier Cugat, Guy Lombardo, Dinah Shore, Sarah Vaughan amongst many others. His career reached a climax in 1959 when he fused Latin with Klemzer on his Decca album "Bagels And Bongos", one of the first such world music fusions. He'd go on to fuse many world music styles with Latin rhythms.
