Dopo le Leggi razziali del 1938, la famiglia Di Segni continua a vivere a Roma ma nel 1943 capisce che i rischi sono aumentati. Il figlio diciottenne Pacifico Franco viene messo al riparo sui tetti dell'Ambasciata di Francia con altri ragazzi. Lì resterà fino all'aprile del '44. Durante la clandestinità scrive un diario della guerra ispirato da quanto ascoltava su Radio Londra. Quando nel giugno 1941 Hitler scatenò l'"operazione Barbarossa" contro l'Unione Sovietica, avrebbe fatto volentieri a meno dell'aiuto italiano; l'Italia, aveva scritto a Mussolini, avrebbe giovato di più concentrando il suo impegno in Nordafrica. Ma Mussolini voleva esserci a tutti i costi, e fece costituire il Corpo di spedizione italiano in Russia (Csir), che a metà luglio partì per il fronte orientale. Un anno dopo, unito a nuovi corpi d'armata nell'Armir (Armata italiana in Russia), fu schierato sul Don.

All'indomani dell'armistizio, l'8 settembre 1943, oltre seicentomila italiani rifiutarono di continuare a combattere nelle file dell'esercito tedesco. Molti di loro furono deportati nei lager nazisti. Gli IMI, gli "Internati militari italiani", furono inizialmente trattati come prigionieri di guerra, al pari degli altri soldati alleati catturati, ma presto la ritorsione del Reich li sottrasse alle garanzie previste dalla Convenzione di Ginevra. Per l'esercito dell'Asse erano traditori. Li attendevano sofferenze, privazioni e, soprattutto, la totale disumanizzazione.

In the late summer of 1943, when Italy changed sides in WWII and the Germans, now their enemies, occupied the north of the country, an Italian Resistance was born. Ada, Frida, Silvia, and Bianca were four young Piedmontese women who joined the Resistance, living secretively in the mountains surrounding Turin. They were not alone. Between 1943 and 1945, as the Allies battled their way north, thousands of men and women throughout occupied Italy rose up and fought to liberate their country from the German invaders and their Fascist collaborators.

Italy's Rosselli family were members of the cosmopolitan, cultural elite in Florence at the start of the twentieth century. Led by their fierce matriarch, Amelia Rosselli, they were also vocal anti-fascists. As Mussolini rose to power in Italy following WWI, the Rossellis took leading roles in the rebellion against him, a stance that few in their class would risk. And when Mussolini established a police state whose tactics grew more brutal, the Rossellis and their anti-fascist friends transformed from debaters and critics into activists.
