New Testament English

This essay is an overview of the ways in which the Old Testament books of wisdom, poetry, and Writings are used in the New Testament. The OT Writings are rarely quoted in the NT, but the many themes are found therein. The use of OT Wisdom books (Job, Eccl) is examined in the Gospels, Pauline Letters, and other letters separately. The use of OT poetry is seen in the frequent quotation and use of Psalms and hymns. The essays includes an extensive bibliography.

By the time John the Apostle enters his nineties, he is the last living apostle. After preaching the gospel for decades, John could have faded into a quiet retirement, content with the impact he made on the first-century church. Instead, this elder statesman picks up his pen and writes three personal postcards — one addressed to a local church and two delivered to individual believers. These inspired letters offer wisdom and encouragement for faithful disciples worldwide.

Why should the beliefs and practices of the New Testament writers be important to sincere Bible-believing Christians today? Because they received “the faith once delivered to the saints.” (Jude 3) So to the degree that we believe and practice what they believed and practiced, to that degree we have the original Christian faith.

Paul's first letter to Corinth, set in a bustling seaport, resonates with timeless wisdom and challenges. The young church mirrored the vibrant city, brimming with questions, problems, joy and excitement, akin to today's growing churches.
