Emma Goldman was initially supportive of Russia’s Bolshevik revolution. This 1918 pamphlet was published in elucidation of the revolution and in justification of the Bolsheviks. Goldman reversed her opinion in the wake of the Kronstadt rebellion and denounced the Soviet Union for its violent repression of independent voices.

Emma Goldman was a passionate critic of the prison system, criticizing both the treatment of prisoners and the social causes of crime. She considered crime as a natural outgrowth of an unjust economic system, and in her essay "Prisons: A Social Crime and Failure" (1911), she quoted liberally from the authors Fyodor Dostoevsky and Oscar Wilde on the subject.

Published in the February 1916 issue of her magazine, Mother Earth, Goldman states that it is only by totally rejecting the idea of God that mankind can break away from the crutch of religion and achieve true freedom. Goldman argued that religion is irrational, destructive, and harmful.
