دسيدريوس إيراسموس الفيلسوف الهولندي إحدى رواد الحركة الإنسانية في أوروبا، كان يحاول جاداً إتاحة قراءة الكتاب المقدس للعامة وحتى للنساء أيضاً، وهو ما كان محرماً، الشيء الذي دعا مارتن لوثر للثورة على الكنيسة الكاثوليكية، وفي كتابه هذا "حرية الإرادة" يطرح إيراسموس رؤية نقدية لآراء مارتن لوثر فيما يتعلق بالإرادة الإنسانية والكتاب في الأساس عبارة عن محاورة بين المؤلف ومارتن لوثر حول حرية الإرادة.

يعدّ الكواكبي أحد رواد النهضة العربية ومفكريها في القرن التاسع عشر، وأحد مؤسسي الفكر القومي العربي، اشتهر بكتاب (طبائع الاستبداد ومصارع الاستعباد) الذي يعد من أهم الكتب العربية في القرن التاسع عشر التي تناقش ظاهرة الاستبداد السياسي.
