Tehran, June 12, 2009. Mohsen Abbaspour, an ordinary young man in his 20s - not particularly political, or ambitious, or worldly - casts the first vote of his life in Iran's 10th presidential election. Fed up with rising unemployment and inflation, he backs the reformist party and its candidate, Mir-Hossein Mousavi. Mohsen believes his vote will count. It will not.

The IRGC is notable for its involvement in conflicts around the Middle East, particularly in supporting Shi'a groups through military training and finance, as well as backup support on the battlefield. This is not to say the IRGC enters into conflicts for the sake of being involved, but rather, they see these particular situations as serving the interests of Iran and furthering their brand of Shi'ism, a sect of Islam.

In the summer of 2011, Amir Hekmati travels to Iran to visit his relatives for the first time. Three weeks into the trip, and only a few days before his return home, he is abruptly detained by Iranian Intelligence operatives and imprisoned. Amir’s arrest coincides with the US arrest of Iranian National, Mansour Arbabsiar in NYC, the man convicted of attempting to blow up the Saudi Embassy in Washington, DC. Amir Hekmati, a former US Marine and combat veteran, is subjected to torture, sentenced to death by hanging, and ultimately endures close to five years in Evin Prison.

In many ways, Ebrahim Raisi epitomizes the religious fascism ruling Iran; a tyrannical regime that for more than four decades has inflicted immense suffering and pain on the Iranian people, the region, and many other countries, using the two instruments of domestic repression and export of terrorism and deadly conflicts abroad. This book may help introduce Ebrahim Raisi and explain the significant moment that his rise to the presidency of Iran represents.
