Concentrating on the 1930s through the 1970s, but also speaking to the rising popularity of today's narrative broadcasts such as This American Life, Radiolab, Serial, and The Organist, Porter's close readings of key radio programs show how writers adapted literary techniques to an acoustic medium with great effect.

The story that inspired the famous Twilight Zone episode! "People Are Alike All Over" (which starred Roddy McDowall) became one of the most famous episodes of that classic television series. That memorable script was adapted from veteran science fiction author Paul W. Fairman's story for Fantastic Adventures magazine, where it was published under it's original title "Brothers Beyond the Void".

小林多喜二による昭和初期のプロレタリア文学の代表作の音声ドラマ化。蟹工船とは、戦前にカムチャツカ半島沖海域で行われた北洋漁業で使用される、加工設備を備えた大型船。蟹工船には航海法は適用されず、危険な老朽船が改造して投入された。また労働法規も適用されなかった。そのため貧困層から募集した出稼ぎ労働者に対する非人道的な酷使がまかり通っていた。情け知らずの監督は労働者は劣悪で過酷な労働環境の中、暴力・虐待・過労や病気で次々と倒れてゆく。昨今のブラックな職場、パワハラが横行する社会状況は、歴史は繰り返すという言葉通りだ。先人が苦労して獲得した権利も、獲得した側が無自覚になればなし崩しになることを、意識させてくれる作品といえる。

Frankie Howerd was one of Britain’s most popular entertainers, with a career spanning over 30 years. Starting his career during WW2, he went on to widespread fame in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s with films and extensive TV work.
