Sailing Memoir

In the spring of 1992 (eight years before the publication of In the Heart of the Sea), Nat Philbrick was in his late 30s, living with his family on Nantucket, feeling stranded and longing for the thrill of victory of a national sailing championship he had won 15 years earlier. Was it a midlife crisis? It was certainly a watershed for the journalist turned stay-at-home dad, who impulsively decided to throw his hat into the ring, or water, again.

What you are about to read is a hodgepodge of stories--true stories--of my youth during pre-Civil Rights Era Alabama; my career as a field geologist with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers; my second home near Taos, New Mexico; and some odd stories, including the love of sailing; and toward the end, some "off the wall" essays wrapping up this unique tome of laughs, tears, and adventures!

As founder and editor of the highly successful magazine Latitudes & Attitudes, he surveys and comments on the good and the bad, the funny and the sad, the practical and the theoretical of the sailing scene.
