Messages from Nature is a collection of short stories about animals, trials at sea, and the evolutionary journey of man and nature. It is a book for all ages. Based on my personal experiences, most of the stories were previously published in newspapers and magazines over the years. Also included is one poignant tale about a greyhound written by my late father, Daly Highleyman, and published in the 1930s.

On February 1, 2016, the date of the Iowa caucus, David Breskin began a project that would carry him through the American presidential election. An ex-journalist, Breskin set out to "cover" this most strange and historic election, under the pressure of a reporter's daily deadline, by writing one poem a day. He created a deliberately awkward, rollickingly restrictive form - seven beats per line, 11 lines per poem - and, noting our preference for the convenience of sound-bite news and junk-food polls over more nutritious fare, called them "7-11s".

Surprise! Looking up to the sky watching ducks fly by, Hamilton sees something he has never seen before; another troll! Hamilton suddenly realizes he's not the only troll in the world. Leaping at the chance to learn more, he begs Starlit to stay for a while then introduces her to all of his friends. The next day, he can't find her and he begins to worry. The search for the missing troll is only the first challenge. When they approach Hamilton's picnic, there's another surprise.

Mindful mending in a scientized world: With everything digitized also being scientized, the defining is a living quest. Indeed science is an alphabet of possibilities. Yes, science is safe, except when it isn't, yet, as with Pi, the dividend is infinite. A poetry of mindful mending may fit this sending, but how snakes sidewind and sandfish swim, how early legged animals first crawled up, like a poet to his own shore, are the subtext to far beyond and more. Ecology needs new buzz words, fiercely motivating, to turn public attention toward mindful mending.

While listening to the sounds of the night, Hamilton Troll hears something that scares him. He soon discovers that it is a young owl named Whitaker who is being taught by his parents how to hoot. Unfortunately Whitaker needs a lot of practice. After the lesson is over, Hamilton and Whitaker go for a walk only to discover a large bear entering the area. Worried for their friends who may not be able to get to safety, Whitaker comes up with a daring plan to scare the bear away.
