Yuri Bezmenov (1939-January 5, 1993) was a Soviet journalist for RIA Novosti and a former KGB informant who defected to Canada in 1971. "Der Idiot" gehört zu den bekanntesten Romanen Fjodor Dostojewskis. Der Autor erzählt die Leidensgeschichte des Studenten Rodion Raskolnikow, der zum Mörder wird und letztlich daran zerbricht. Die Suche nach Moral und Gerechtigkeit und der Umgang mit Schuld vor dem Hintergrund gesellschaftlicher Veränderungen sind die Themen, die von Dostojewski hier verarbeitet werden. Nicht zuletzt wird dabei ein klares Bild der sozialen Verhältnisse im St. Petersburg des 19. Jahrhunderts gezeichnet.
