Privatdetektiv Philip Maloney ermittelt mit Charme, Schalk und unverkennbarer Raubeinigkeit. Seine Fälle werden ihm von seinen Klienten zugetragen und beginnen harmlos, doch stösst Maloney im Laufe der Ermittlungen meistens auf eine Leiche. Widerwillig muss er mit der Polizei zusammenarbeiten. Der zuständige Beamte ist nicht der Hellste und löst lieber Kreuzworträtsel als Kriminalfälle. Am Ende klärt immer Maloney den Fall.
