War Diaries

For over 35 years, my Grandfather’s World War I memoirs lay in a battered tin box at the back of various storage cupboards in my grandparents’ and then my parents’ homes. When I finally found them, I knew they were too valuable to sit in the dark, unread; I wanted to share my Grandfather’s words with everyone. A compilation of his letters and diary entries from 1914-1918 and his written memoirs from the 1970s, the account you are about to read is told in my Grandfather’s words, unembellished and resolutely true to the commitment he felt toward his country and his fellow man.

Swansong 1945 chronicles the end of Nazi Germany and World War II in Europe through hundreds of letters, diaries, and autobiographical accounts covering four days that fateful spring: Hitler's birthday on April 20, American and Soviet troops meeting at the Elbe on April 25, Hitler's suicide on April 30, and finally the German surrender on May 8.

Martha Gellhorn was a strong-willed, self-made, modern woman whose journalism, and life, were widely influential at the time and cleared a path for women who came after her. An ardent anti-fascist, she wrote about real people doing real things with intelligence and passion. She is most famous, to her enduring exasperation, as Ernest Hemingway's third wife. Major Gerhard Engel was Hitler's army adjutant from 1938 to 1943. During his years with Hitler, Engel kept a diary. After the war, he added material to shed further light on certain events, military and political decisions, and Hitler's attitude to particular problems.
