The clash of armies in the American Civil War left hundreds of thousands of men dead, wounded, or permanently damaged. Skirmishes and battles could result in casualty numbers as low as one or two and as high as 10s of thousands. The carnage of the battlefield left a lasting impression on those who experienced or viewed it, but in most cases the armies quickly moved on to meet again at another time and place. When the dust settled and the living armies moved on, what happened to the dead left behind?

Even if we live within sight of the sea, it is easy to forget that our world is an ocean world. At this point, all we can do is hope that we will all one day find happiness by doing what we know to be good, which is possibly subterfuge, paying penance for our inhumanities, the mistakes it takes to grow as a person, as people, evolve as a species. Some are mechanized as sheer predators, and others as sheer prey. Life, all life, seeks to survive. The mechanics of the mind is why we go to war. We are built to survive, love, feel, kill, eat, prey, and play. The cosmic recipe of our existence copulates the need for war.
