War Years

When the Nazis entered Poland in September 1939, Joseph lost his entire family and his Hevra. They were murdered because they were Jewish. At the young age of 17, he had to learn how to survive, all on his own. There was no escape possible. Joseph was transported to the worst places conceivable, first Majdanek, then Auschwitz, Dora and Bergen-Belsen. In these camps he experienced desperation, illness, starvation and unimaginable brutality.

In 2003, after serving five and a half years as a carpenter in a North Dakota National Guard engineer unit, Bronson Lemer was ready to leave the military behind. But six months short of completing his commitment to the army, Lemer was deployed on a yearlong tour of duty to Iraq. Eight hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the Japanese Imperial Army launched an invasion plan for Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong. Since Hong Kong was a British Colony at the time, soldiers from British colonies including India and Canada fought alongside Chinese guerrilla fighters. However, soldiers defending the city at the time were largely unprepared and Japan claimed its victory within 18 days.

The contributors – Antoine Bourguilleau, Alan Saunders, Arthur Harman, and Bob Cordery – are all very experienced wargamers, and have collaborated to produce a book of wargame rules for fighting battles set during the Pike and Shot period. The Portable Pike & Shot Wargame book contains four different sets of grid-based wargame rules and covers late sixteenth century warfare in Japan and seventeenth century warfare in Europe. The book includes eleven chapters as well as an appendix and a bibliography.
