禅の六祖・慧能（えのう）が懇々と教えている大事な要点は、佛というものは決して人間を超越した存在ではない、ということである。信仰者は佛を超越的存在に持ってゆきたがるが、佛というものは、自身、吾、心、衆生を離れては決して存在しない。
一方、儒教は、どこまでも人間と現実に徹して、情熱をもってこれを改めてゆこうとするもので、必ずしもその成功を求めない。良心、真理、道を旨とし、実践に徹してゆこうとするのがその真面目である。
儒教、道教、佛教は違うというけれども、世間一般に言うような差異ではない。儒教でも、「命（めい）に従う」とか「運を啓（ひら）く」というような問題になれば、浄土門の佛にすがるというのと同工異曲である。だから現れる形は違っても、少し奥へ入れば真理は一つ。諸教は帰するところみな同じである。

この本は、臨済宗妙心寺派福聚寺の副住職であり、芥川賞作家でもある玄侑和尚が雑誌・新聞等に掲載した短いエッセイをまとめたものです。

以前訪れた動物園の水槽で、ヌボーッと佇んでいたサンショウウオ。
その何をするでもないが、仄かな明るさを纏った彼(彼女?)の姿と、
「八風吹けど動ぜず」という禅の言葉が、和尚の中でリンクしたのです。
それ以来、和尚の中にはある種憧れのようなサンショウウオが一匹住み始めました。

もうひとつ禅の言葉で、「放下(ほうげ)」というものがあります。
一瞬ごとに「今」という一瞬が死に、新しく次の「今」という一瞬がやってくる。
悲しみや怒りの時間を捨て、新たに展開した笑顔の時間を人は生きるのです。

和尚は、「新しい一瞬一瞬を重ね塗りせず生きていくから、
いつまでたってもその色合いは鮮やかであり、明るい」と説きます。

自分だけのサンショウウオを飼いながら、人生をゆらり、どっしり、たまにはテキパキと、鼻歌でも歌いながら明るい人生を過ごしましょう。
