『휘청거리는 오후』는 우리 주변에 있음직한 평범한 중산층 가족의 삶을 다룬 소설로, 결혼 적령기에 접어든 세 딸, 초희, 우희, 말희의 연애와 결혼, 그리고 그 과정에서 파생된 자영업자 허성 씨와 부인 민 여사의 가치관이 중심을 이루고 있다. 그러나 본질적으로는 서울 중산층의 삶과 의식을 넘어 사회구조와 의식의 차원을 다뤘다. 작은 집단의 모습에 거대한 사회적 흐름을 투영시켜 담아온 박완서 특유의 소설 구조가 나타난 세태 소설이다. 세 자매의 연애 및 결혼 과정에 절묘히 얽혀 있는 물질 숭배 사상과 여성에 대한 이중적 잣대, 사회적 편견과 강박 등이 이 소설을 지배하고 있다.
