Ｇ総監はデュパンにアドバイスがほしいと頼んできた。
その事件は極めてシンプルな単純な事件だが、とてもヘンなのでデュパンも興味を持つのではないかとＧ総監は話してきた。
その事件とは…とある身分の高い方から総監にとても大切な手紙が盗まれたと知らせがあった。しかし、手紙の持ち主はだれが盗んだのかを知っている。
それは、犯人が手紙をぬすむところを見ていたからだと。しかも、まだその犯人が手紙を持っていることもわかっていると。そして、その手紙には秘密のことが書いてあり、内容が公になればとても地位の高い方の名誉が傷ついてしまう。
犯人は自分に得があることならなんでもやると言われているD大臣。
パリ警察はD大臣の屋敷を3か月間くまなく探し、D大臣を待ち伏せしおいはぎをするかのように持ち物検査を2度もした。
しかし、手紙はみつからない。
デュパンの考えた策とは…。

エドガー・アラン・ポー（Edgar Allan Poe）
1809年1月19日～1849年10月7日。アメリカ合衆国ボストン市生まれの小説家・詩人。血液型はAB型。
1841年に発表された小説『モルグ街の殺人』には探偵のC・オーギュスト・デュパンが登場し、史上初の推理小説と評価されることが多く、その後の推理小説の発展に寄与した。
また、ホラー小説の分野でも一時代を代表する作家とみなされている。さらに作品に科学的事実を取り入れる手法はジュール・ヴェルヌによって注目され、近代SF発展の一因ともなった。
詩人としては、自らの詩を解説しながら詩の構築を説いた『詩の原理』で、フランスの詩人、ボードレール、ステファヌ・マラルメなどの象徴派の系譜に多大な影響を与えた。
ちなみに日本の推理作家、江戸川乱歩の名前は、エドガー・アラン・ポーをもじって付けられたものである。©2023 PanRolling
